One of the things I loved most about Roamstead is that it truly offers accommodations for all types of campers. Whether you’re a hardcore tent camper or, like me, more of a glamper, there’s something for everyone.
I stayed in Cabin Oak 10 with two other wonderful ladies, and the cabin looked exactly like the photos online (always a win!) It included a queen bed, 2 twin-sized beds, a kitchenette, a small living room area, A/C, and a front porch overlooking the creek.
Our cabin had two bedrooms—one with a queen-sized bed and the other with two twin beds. It was clean, cozy, and intentionally TV-free, which made it easier to truly disconnect. Roamstead does offer Wi-Fi, so reconnecting is always an option when you need it.
In addition to cabins, Roamstead also offers yurts, airstreams, RV sites, and tent camping plots. No matter your camping style, you’ll find something that fits.
2. Close to Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge—Without the Noise
Roamstead is located closest to Gatlinburg, about a 25-minute drive, while Pigeon Forge is roughly 45 minutes away. Both drives offer scenic routes through the mountains, which makes getting there part of the experience.
We visited during Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, and both cities were extremely busy. It was nice to enjoy everything Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge had to offer—and then drive back to the peace and quiet of Roamstead. Having that separation made the trip feel far more relaxing.
3. Easy Access to Hiking Trails
If hiking is high on your Smoky Mountains itinerary, Roamstead’s location is ideal. When checking in, we were given a map of the property, which includes a hiking trail right on-site.
Roamstead is also nestled within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park region, offering access to numerous trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. Several trails are within a reasonable driving distance, and the Great Smoky Mountain Trail is about 30 minutes away—well worth the trip for the views alone.
4. A Truly Peaceful Atmosphere
Roamstead sits just off a quiet country road, making it feel secluded without being isolated. We visited during the winter, and the air was cold and crisp. While the area does receive snow, we didn’t experience any during our stay—but the atmosphere was still incredibly calm.
Even with a large group, the environment remained peaceful. The cabins are positioned in front of a small creek, and sitting on the porch listening to the water flow—along with other natural outdoor sounds—was incredibly relaxing.
The outdoor lodge area includes a pavilion and fire pits, making it the perfect place to unwind. Ending the night by a fire pit, making s’mores on a cold evening, felt both rejuvenating and grounding.
5. Friendly, Welcoming Hosts
No matter where you stay, friendly hosts can make or break the experience—and Roamstead delivered. Every staff member we interacted with was kind, helpful, and accommodating.
We were a large group with scheduled activities, and the staff handled everything seamlessly. From check-in to check-out, ordering spiked hot chocolate, and offering recommendations for things to do in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, the Roamstead team made us feel genuinely welcome the entire time.
