Lynchburg, Tennessee, wasn’t initially on my radar, but it became one of the most relaxing and inspiring trips I’ve taken. The journey began unexpectedly after picking up a book at an airport bookstore on my way to Cancun. This book, entitled “Love & Whiskey: The Remarkable True Story of Jack Daniel, His Master Distiller Nearest Green, and the Improbable Rise of Uncle Nearest” by the incomparable Fawn Weaver, detailed the story behind Jack Daniel’s whiskey and the incredible legacy of Nearest Green, the enslaved man who taught Jack Daniel how to distill. It sparked my curiosity and set the stage for a visit to Lynchburg.
Planning the Trip

As part of my Veterans Day weekend, I already planned to join a hiking group for an outing to Fort Mountain State Park in northwestern Georgia. As I mapped out the weekend, I realized Lynchburg was just a 2.5-hour drive away, and it felt like fate. I created a short itinerary, saved my must-visit spots on Google Maps, and set off to experience a town rich in history and charm.
First Stop: Nearest Green Distillery

My adventure began at the Nearest Green Distillery. Despite a light drizzle, the setting was picturesque. I grabbed lunch at Barrel House BBQ, famous for its “Grilled Cheese on Crack.” The food lived up to the hype! I also had ribs, pulled pork, mac and cheese, and green beans, making for a hearty post-hike meal.
Before my distillery tour, I stopped by Humble Baron, home to the longest bar in the world. The space was massive, and while photos didn’t do it justice, the experience of sipping a cocktail there was unforgettable. The tour itself was inspiring—learning about the Green family’s legacy and seeing how their story is interwoven with Jack Daniel’s history was a highlight of the trip.
Lodging in Lynchburg: The Dolly and The Duke

For my accommodation, I stayed at The Silos at Promise Manor. They are two cozy structures that were once 60-year-old grain bins. Nestled on a farm, it featured charming rustic decor, an outdoor tub, and a hammock on the back porch. I originally planned to only stay for one night, and I stayed in “Dolly,” named after Dolly Parton. That evening, I soaked in the tub with a glass of rosé while rain gently hit the tin roof—a euphoric moment of peace. That night, I was a bit paranoid because of the rain and tin sound effect, but everything was fine.
The next day, I extended my stay, moving to another Airbnb called “The Duke,” named after John Wayne. Both were thoughtfully decorated and incredibly cozy, making my visit feel even more special.
Second Stop: Miss Mary Bobo’s and Jack Daniel’s Distillery

The next morning, I visited Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House for lunch. Although I say with a group of strangers, it was designed to feel like one was sitting with family members for a meal. We had fried chicken, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, candied apples, and cheesecake filled the table while a host shared stories of Jack Daniel’s and the community’s history.
Later, I toured the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, where I learned what makes Tennessee whiskey unique. Walking through the barrel houses and seeing the whiskey-making process firsthand was fascinating, even for someone who doesn’t drink whiskey straight. Fun Fact: Lynchburg, TN is located in Moore County, which is a dry county! Basically, the sale of alcohol is prohibited, which is interesting, being that the most popular whiskey distilleries in the world.
Quick Stop: Rutledge Falls

My final stop was Rutledge Falls, a picturesque waterfall featured in a Miley Cyrus movie. Although I didn’t hike down to the base, it was a beautiful sight and a peaceful way to end my trip.
Final Thoughts on Lynchburg
Lynchburg surpassed all my expectations. Its rolling hills, small-town charm, and rich history created a perfect blend of relaxation and inspiration. I felt safe, welcomed, and at peace—qualities I’ll carry with me until my next trip.
If you’re considering a visit, I highly recommend it! Whether it’s the distilleries, the Southern comfort food, or the serene Airbnb stays, Lynchburg has something special to offer.
